Fribourg, May 28, 2025 – The community of the Missionaries of Bethlehem (SMB) in Torry had the honor of welcoming Bishop Sébastien-Joseph Muyengo, bishop of the Diocese of Uvira in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In Switzerland to participate in the 25th edition of the Pilgrimage of the Saints of Africa, Bishop Muyengo took the opportunity to meet with Fr. Ludovic Nobel, Superior General of the SMB.
The two church leaders discussed the current challenges facing the Diocese of Uvira, particularly the concerning humanitarian situation in the eastern region of the country, marked by violence, instability, and poverty. Bishop Muyengo expressed his desire to welcome the Missionaries of Bethlehem into his diocese, especially in rural areas where pastoral and social needs are urgent. He emphasized the need for a strong missionary presence, rooted in the Gospel, capable of restoring the dignity of God’s people.
Their conversation also touched on the potential for collaboration in the fields of education, healthcare, and ongoing formation of priests. A mutual understanding was reached to continue the dialogue, establish a solid foundation, and explore concrete forms of partnership.
On this occasion, Bishop Muyengo and Fr. Ludovic discussed the upcoming arrival of Fr. Bellarmin Mwati, a priest from the Diocese of Uvira, who will be welcomed into the SMB house in Torry to pursue studies at the University of Fribourg beginning next academic year. His presence will serve as a living bridge and a tangible step toward fraternal collaboration.
